Welcome to the Kimberley...

Middle of nowhereBordered by the Great Sandy Desert and the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, the wild and remote area known as the Kimberley is one of the country's last great frontiers. Until recently, thisrugged landscape was only for hardened pioneers and prospectors, andeven they found the going tough. But with the introduction of theNational Highway, the Kimberley was on the tourist map, temptingtravellers to venture further from the beach mecca of Broome for thefirst time. Those that do are treated to breathtaking scenery dotted by hospitable and tourist-geared township's, combining to create oneof the most rewarding travel experiences you'll find anywhere in Australia.

The only unfortunate aspect of the Kimberley is that it suffers from the climatic extremes of the Wet and Dry seasons, similar to those in the Top End and Cape York Peninsula. During the Wet, the area's mighty rivers can swell to over ten kilometres wide, making the roads impassable for days. Although this rejuvenation period is a spectaculartime to visit, the best time is during the Dry between April and October.
