South West of Sydney is Glebe - the original eat street. With a generous splashing of restaurants and cafes, it has a distinct bohemian flavour, shops sell crystals and alternative therapy, theatre predominates and many pubs host live music.Bordering the north side of the University of Sydney it has a large student population integrated with numerous travellers,(you can expect to find a few decent hostels).
On the South side of the University, Newtown is full of funky clothes stores, book shops, cafes, antiques, live music venues and interior design shops, with a large dose of grunge thrown in. It has a vibrant artist community and a diverse mix of cultures supplemented by the neighbouring student population. Newtown has a wide variety of international restaurants which attract tourists looking for a good cheap meal.
