Situated on the north-east border of the inner city, Fortitude Valley still holds onto some of it's post-war darker element image.Known as The Valley to the locals, the area has the best of the cheaper restaurants in Brisbane as well as some great nightclubs and someinteresting shopping. An alternative market is held every Saturday onBrunswick Street Mall.
To the north Bowen Hills is next to the cities exhibition groundswhere the Royal National Agricultural Show or Ekka is held every August/September. Also held annually at the grounds is a 10 day internationalfilm festival in August and the Livid alternative rock music concertin September. The Adjacent suburb of Newstead has the oldest house inQueensland which has been brilliantly restored and offers an accuratelook into what a quintessential Australian homestead must have been like.
Across the river, the quaint communities of Balmoral and Hawthorne each of which have their own sprinkling of cafes and restaurants. Oxford St in Bulimba would make an especially goodchoice.
